He is best remembered for his five-novel series, The Leatherstocking Tales, which includes The Last of the Mohicans, The Deerslayer, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie. Born in Burlington, New Jersey, in 1789, Cooper was the eleventh of twelve children and the son of a U.S. Congressman. He was educated at Yale College and, after college, served in the United States Navy. After his naval service ended, Cooper moved to Cooperstown, New York, where he began his prolific career as a writer. Cooper's most popular works were written during the first half of the 19th century and his influence can still be felt today. With his vivid descriptions of nature and frontier life, Cooper was one of the first writers to romanticize the American wilderness and to portray Native Americans in a sympathetic light. His works are often credited with helping to shape the identity of the United States as a nation. Cooper was also an influential early critic of American industrialization and the expansion of slavery.
